Podcast Na Vŕšku #149 – Anti-capitalism or health? (with Christopher Snowdon) 🔊

In this episode of our podcast #NaVŕšku, we examine Dr. Christopher Snowdon’s essay “Anti-Capitalism and Public Health,” published by the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) and translated into Slovak by INESS.

Snowdon demonstrates how a significant portion of the public health academic community has strayed from neutral, evidence-based science and increasingly employs explicitly anti-capitalist rhetoric that identifies the market, commerce, and economic growth as the root cause of many of humanity’s health problems.

Dr. Christopher Snowdon is the head of the “Lifestyle Economics” department at the IEA and has long been critical of so-called “health authoritarian” measures and the “nanny state” in the regulation of alcohol, tobacco, and food. In this work, he examines how the focus in public health is shifting from specific industries (“big tobacco,” “big food”) to an attack on broader “commercial determinants of health,” and how some researchers are calling for radical economic alternatives such as “degrowth” or “doughnut economics.”

The video explains why Snowdon views this development less as a “health” issue and more as an ideological debate, and why he calls on market-oriented politicians to take this anti-capitalist current in public health seriously. We also explain how such positions can lead to real policy measures, ranging from sugar taxes and minimum alcohol prices to broader attempts to regulate capitalism in the name of public health.
