This year, the Economics Olympiad attracted once again the interest of more than 10,000 young Slovaks and helped them to gain appreciation and recognition for their knowledge and skills in the fields of economics and finance. The sixth year of the Economics Olympiad for high-school students was concluded with the finals, which took place on Thursday, 4th May 2023 at the Hotel Devín in Bratislava.

After two pandemic years, we have once again managed to prepare, in cooperation with foreign partners, an in-person international round of the Economics Olympiad. The event was organised by the Czech Institute of Economic Education (INEV), in cooperation with the Hungarian Economic Association and with support from the Visegrad Fund.

The pandemic, war and heavily criticized graduation exams have not deterred young people interested in economics from taking part in this year's Economics Olympiad. Interest in economic topics grows every year, which was evident in the fifth year of the Olympiad, which attracted a record number of students from all over Slovakia.

Despite the unfavourable situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and pandemic restrictions in 2020-2021, we were able to hold the fourth edition of the Economics Olympiad, the first comprehensive nationwide competition in economics and finance for high school students in Slovakia. What is more, we were happy to welcome a record number of high school students from all over the country to take part in the competition this year.

When it comes to real life problems, adults usually start reminiscing about their school days with a bit of bitterness. Sometimes, they blame teachers that had failed at teaching, and on other occasions they blame themselves for not paying more attention. The skills that are missing the most often are usually those related to Economics and Financial literacy.

On September 10, 2019 ,the first international finale of the Economics Olympiad took place in the Czech national bank in Prague. Slovakia was excellently represented by five students from whom two reached the first two medal positions. High school students undoubtedly proved that despite reports of low financial literacy of Slovaks, there are many exceptionally talented young economists who will not get lost even in international comparison.
